The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 6.03 million cases by Wednesday, March 8, 2023. According to GISAID data, Cameroon recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with 670 new cases. The total number of Omicron cases in Cameroon currently represents 0.01 percent of the global total.
Next is China (PRC), which recorded a 6.14 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous week. Daily data shows a 0.85 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous day.
Furthermore, Omicron cases in Ukraine increased by 5.51 percent to 1,532 cases compared to the previous week; Brunei Darussalam saw a 5.26 percent increase with 4,925 new Omicron cases; and Sweden saw a 2.9 percent increase, with 97,532 new Omicron cases compared to the previous week.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, 34,622 new Omicron cases were recorded, representing a 0.44 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, the number of Omicron cases in Indonesia has continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
