This week's COVID-19 statistics in Asia still depict a concerning situation, with high death tolls remaining in most countries. Fourteen countries recorded increased deaths this week, while twelve others saw a decrease in the number of deaths.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Georgia, Turkey, and Sri Lanka. A total of 64 deaths were recorded in these five countries as of Thursday, July 7, 2022, representing a weekly growth exceeding 100 percent.
Bangladesh ranks first, with a 227.27 percent weekly increase in deaths. Worldometer recorded 36 deaths in the country, up from 11 the previous week.
Hong Kong follows in second place, with a 200 percent increase in deaths compared to the previous week. Six deaths were reported, compared to two the previous week.
Rounding out the top five are Georgia with three deaths (up 200%), Turkey with 17 deaths (up 112.5%), and Sri Lanka with two deaths (up 100%).
Looking at the total number of reported deaths, Taiwan recorded the highest number of deaths in Asia over the past seven days, with 680 deaths. This represents a 22.9% decrease compared to the previous week. Following Taiwan, Japan reported 193 deaths (up 2.12%), India 193 deaths (up 10.29%), Thailand 116 deaths (up 6.42%), and the Philippines 79 deaths (up 36.21%).
A total of 1,556 deaths were recorded in Asia over the past seven days. This accounts for 17.01 percent of global COVID-19 deaths, which totaled 9,145. The number of deaths in Asia decreased compared to the previous seven-day period, which saw 1,682 deaths.
