From July 26 to August 1, 2021, Indonesia recorded 12,444 Covid-19 deaths. This figure represents a 28% increase compared to the previous week, which saw 9,697 deaths.
This increase in weekly Covid-19 deaths places Indonesia at the top globally. Brazil follows in second place with 6,887 additional deaths over the past week.
Russia is in third place, recording 5,478 Covid-19 deaths in the last week. India and Myanmar follow with 3,812 and 2,620 deaths respectively.
Siti Nadia Tarmizi, Director of Prevention and Control of Directly Transmissible Infectious Diseases (P2PML) at the Ministry of Health, stated that several factors contribute to the rising number of Covid-19 deaths in Indonesia. These include patients' delayed access to hospital services and the widespread outbreak of the Delta variant.
To prevent further transmission, the government urges the public to diligently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining physical distance, and washing hands with soap. The public is also encouraged to reduce mobility and avoid crowds.
