Poor air quality in DKI Jakarta and its surrounding areas continues to be widely complained about on social media and in the mass media. However, it turns out that the capital city is not the only area with the worst air quality in Indonesia lately.
Based on data compiled by IQAir, Terentang, West Kalimantan (Kalbar), has recorded unhealthy air quality scores for the past week. This data uses the United States Air Quality Index (AQI US) as a reference.
On August 13, 2023, the area's daily average score reached 156 points, falling into the unhealthy category or red zone. Afterward, the score increased, even reaching its highest peak at 175 points on August 15-17, 2023.
Since the beginning of this month, Terentang's best air quality score was 66 points on August 2, 2023, which falls into the moderate category.
The latest development on Friday, August 18, 2023, at 4:00 PM WIB, showed Terentang's air quality at 133 points, categorized as unhealthy for sensitive groups. The main pollutant is PM2.5 with a concentration of 48.4 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³).
This pollutant value is 9.7 times higher than the World Health Organization's (WHO) annual air quality guideline. The WHO's ideal air quality standard has a PM2.5 concentration weight between 0 and 5 µg/m³.
The poor air quality in West Kalimantan is caused by increasingly widespread forest and land fires (karhutla), resulting in haze. According to BMKG monitoring, there were 1,618 hotspots throughout West Kalimantan until yesterday afternoon.
The Head of the Information Task Force for Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of West Kalimantan Province, Daniel, stated that hundreds of land fire cases in West Kalimantan have been extinguished by his team.
"In general, there were land fires in West Kalimantan in August 2023, but the exact data is currently being verified," said Daniel, as quoted from Antaranews, Wednesday (August 17, 2023) afternoon.
Here are the air quality parameters based on the AQI US:
* 0-50: Good
* 51-100: Moderate
* 101-150: Unhealthy for sensitive groups
* 151-200: Unhealthy
* 201-300: Very unhealthy
* Over 301: Hazardous
