Travel and Leisure magazine named Java Island the best island in the world in 2018, achieving a score of 95.28 points—the highest among 15 other islands. Java Island received this award due to its ancient culture, stunning scenery, and its UNESCO World Heritage site, Borobudur Temple. Furthermore, Java Island offers modern amenities such as abundant star-rated hotels, white-sand beaches, waterfalls, and volcanic tourism destinations.
Besides Java Island, two other Indonesian islands made the list of the world's 15 best islands. These are Bali Island, ranked second with a score of 94.06 points, and Lombok Island, ranked third with a score of 93.88 points. These three Indonesian islands outperformed the Maldives, which ranked fourth this year with a score of 90.48.
This ranking is published annually by Travel and Leisure based on survey results from the personal experiences of its readers who travel around the world. The assessment is based on several factors, including the island itself, transportation, scenery, hospitality, nature tourism, and safety.
