China has become the country with the highest income, measured by Gross Domestic Product (GDP), among the BRICS nations.
Data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) shows that the nominal GDP of the "Bamboo Curtain" country reached US$19.37 trillion or Rp295.042 trillion (assuming an exchange rate of Rp15,231 per US$) in its April 2023 report.
China's GDP is the second largest globally. This income is still less than that of the United States, which reached US$26.85 trillion or Rp408.977 trillion.
A considerable distance behind in second place is India, which produced a GDP of US$3.74 trillion or Rp56.967 trillion. India's GDP is the fifth highest globally.
This is followed by Brazil with US$2.08 trillion or Rp31.682 trillion. Just below Brazil is the Russian Federation with a GDP of US$2.06 trillion or Rp31.377 trillion.
Finally, South Africa's income is US$399.02 billion or Rp6.077 trillion. This is the smallest GDP among the developing countries in BRICS.
In its *World Economic Outlook April 2023* report, the IMF states that this GDP represents the total value, at current prices, of goods and services produced by a country over a specific period, such as a year.
BRICS, a group of developing countries officially established on June 16, 2009, has a major agenda to counter the hegemony of the United States (US), as written by *Katadata*.
One of the major issues raised by BRICS is the discussion of a new payment instrument, which is one of several ways to counter the dominance of the US dollar, or what is called de-dollarization.
BRICS is now expanding by opening opportunities for other countries to join and strengthen their ranks. At least six new members will join: Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Ethiopia, Iran, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates.
This agreement was decided at the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa on Thursday (August 24, 2023). The leaders of the group opened membership expansion to accelerate efforts to overhaul the world order, which is considered outdated.
"This expansion of membership is historic," said Chinese President Xi Jinping, as quoted by Reuters on Friday (August 25, 2023).
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said the six new candidates will officially become members on January 1, 2024.
