Japan is bracing for a new wave of Covid-19. New Covid-19 cases in the country have been steadily increasing recently.
According to Worldometers, 281,974 new Covid-19 cases were reported in Japan between October 24th and 30th, 2022. This represents a 21% increase compared to the previous week's 233,682 cases.
This weekly increase in Covid-19 cases in Japan is the highest in Asia. South Korea is second, with 241,465 new cases reported in the last week.
Indonesia ranks sixth in Asia, with 19,661 new Covid-19 cases reported between October 24th and 30th, 2022. This is a 40% increase compared to the previous week's 14,093 cases.
The rising trend of weekly Covid-19 cases in Indonesia is cause for concern. The Ministry of Health has reported the emergence of a new Covid-19 subvariant, Omicron XBB, in the country.
Omicron XBB is reportedly highly contagious, but its fatality rate is not higher than that of the original Omicron variant. However, the potential for new mutations remains, so vigilance is necessary.
Spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, Mohammad Syahril, urged the public to continue adhering to health protocols, such as wearing masks, avoiding crowds, washing hands with soap, and getting tested if experiencing Covid-19 symptoms.
"Furthermore, complete your Covid-19 vaccination (two doses), including booster shots, to enhance protection against Covid-19," said Syahril in an official statement on the Sehat Negeriku website on Wednesday, October 26th, 2022.
