Babies Born in 2021 Have a Longer Life Expectancy

One indicator of improvement in Indonesia's Human Development Index (HDI) is the increase in Life Expectancy (LE) at birth. According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the LE of babies born in 2021 increased by 0.1 years to 71.57 years from the previous year. This figure is the highest ever recorded.

During the 2010-2021 period, the government successfully increased the LE of babies at birth by 1.76 years, or an average annual growth of 0.23%. In 2010, the LE at birth was 69.81 years, increasing to 71.57 years in 2021.

In addition to LE, the Mean Years of Schooling (MYS) and Expected Years of Schooling (EYS) of the Indonesian population have also increased. The EYS in Indonesia was recorded at 13.08 years in 2021, up 0.1 years compared to the previous year. This means that Indonesian children aged 7 years have the expectation of pursuing education up to Diploma I.

Meanwhile, the MYS in Indonesia was 8.54 years in 2021, up 0.06 years from the previous year. Thus, the average Indonesian population aged 25 and over has completed education up to the 9th grade.

For information, Indonesia's HDI reached 72.29 in 2021, up 0.49% compared to the previous year's achievement of 71.94. The highest HDI in 2021 was in DKI Jakarta, at 81.11. Meanwhile, the lowest HDI was in Papua, at 60.62.
