Roche, the World's Largest Pharmaceutical Company in 2020

According to a 2021 Pharmaceutical Executive report, Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche was named the world's largest pharmaceutical company based on its prescription drug sales, reaching US$47.5 billion or approximately Rp678.2 trillion (Rp14,277/US$) in 2020.

Novartis, another Swiss pharmaceutical company, ranked second with prescription drug sales of US$47.2 billion or Rp674 trillion. Next, the United States-based pharmaceutical company AbbVie ranked third with sales of US$44.3 billion or Rp632.5 trillion.

The fourth and fifth ranks were also occupied by US pharmaceutical companies, Johnson & Johnson and Bristol Myers Squibb, with sales of US$43.1 billion or Rp615.4 trillion and US$41.9 billion or Rp598.2 trillion, respectively.

Roche's market capitalization increased in 2020 due to its involvement in COVID-19 diagnostic testing. Roche also had the highest research and development expenditure, reaching US$11.3 billion or Rp161.3 trillion in 2020.

Johnson & Johnson's research and development expenditure ranked second after Roche, at US$9.6 billion or Rp137 trillion.
