The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 3.6 million cases by Thursday, May 26, 2022. According to GISAID data, Zambia recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with 512 new cases. The total number of Omicron cases in Zambia currently represents 0.01 percent of the global total.
Next is the Philippines, which recorded a 24.36 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous week. Daily data shows a 0.7 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous day.
Furthermore, Omicron cases in Andorra increased by 22.22 percent to 143 cases compared to the previous week; in China (PRC) there was an increase of 112 Omicron cases (up 16.67 percent); and in Australia, Omicron cases increased by 11.93 percent to 54,192 cases compared to the previous week.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases increased to 11,289, a 0.05 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, the number of Omicron cases in Indonesia has continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
