This week's Covid-19 statistics in Africa show that most countries have recorded a decrease in the number of deaths, a reversal from the previous period where death tolls continued to rise. This week, two countries recorded an increase in deaths, while seven others recorded deaths but in smaller numbers.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Tunisia, South Africa, Ivory Coast, Togo, and Morocco. The total deaths in these five countries as of Saturday, September 10, 2022, amounted to 27, with a weekly growth rate above -33.33 percent.
Tunisia ranks first, with a 300 percent increase in weekly deaths. Worldometer recorded four deaths in the country, an increase from the one death reported the previous week.
Next is South Africa, which recorded 12.5 percent more deaths than the previous week. The number of deaths in this country was reported as 18, 12 more than the 16 recorded the previous week. Ivory Coast recorded two deaths (unchanged from the previous week), Togo recorded one death (0% decrease), and Morocco recorded two deaths (a 33.33% decrease).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Africa occurred in South Africa with 18 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 12.5% compared to the previous week. Following this, Tunisia reported four deaths (a 300% increase), Ivory Coast reported two deaths (0% decrease), Morocco reported two deaths (a 33.33% decrease), and Togo reported one death (0% decrease).
Total deaths in Africa over the past seven days were recorded as 27. This accounts for 0.24 percent of global deaths caused by the Covid-19 virus, totaling 11,365 deaths. The number of deaths in Africa decreased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 31 deaths.
