The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 4.66 million cases by Wednesday, September 21, 2022. Russia leads with a 22.37 percent weekly increase in Omicron cases, totaling 10,185 new cases according to GISAID. Daily cases in Russia increased by 3.58 percent compared to the previous day.
Iceland follows with a 13.13 percent weekly growth in Omicron cases. Daily cases increased by 0.93 percent compared to the previous day, totaling 1,391 cases.
Furthermore, Malaysia saw a 9.44 percent increase in Omicron cases, reaching 17,987 cases compared to the previous week. Slovenia reported 25,133 Omicron cases (a 6.66 percent increase), and Japan saw a 5.21 percent increase, reaching 220,110 cases compared to the previous week.
In Indonesia, 22,304 Omicron cases were recorded, representing a 1.2 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since its initial detection, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
