Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, had the lowest exclusive breastfeeding rate on the island of Java in 2021, according to a report by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS). The exclusive breastfeeding rate in Jakarta reached 65.63%.
This figure decreased by 5.23 percentage points compared to the previous year. In 2020, the exclusive breastfeeding rate was 70.86%.
The exclusive breastfeeding rate in Jakarta in 2021 was even lower than in 2019, which was 68.08%.
Meanwhile, Central Java had the highest exclusive breastfeeding rate on the island of Java in 2021, reaching 78.93%.
Yogyakarta Special Region ranked second in Java with an exclusive breastfeeding rate of 77%. West Java was third with an exclusive breastfeeding rate of 76.46%.
Furthermore, Banten had an exclusive breastfeeding rate of 71.17%, and East Java had a rate of 69.61%.

According to a report by the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), optimal breastfeeding can prevent more than 823,000 child deaths and 20,000 maternal deaths each year.
It should be noted that the first week of August is observed as "World Breastfeeding Week." This aims to raise awareness among all parties about the importance of breastfeeding for infants.
