This week's COVID-19 statistics in Asia show that most countries have recorded a decrease in the number of deaths, a reversal from the previous period where death tolls continued to rise. This week, three countries still recorded an increase in deaths, while five others recorded deaths but in smaller numbers.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Indonesia, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and South Korea. The total deaths in these five countries as of Friday, May 5, 2023, amounted to 407, with a weekly growth rate above -11.86 percent.
Indonesia recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 deaths in Asia, with weekly growth reaching 191.07 percent. Worldometer recorded 163 deaths in the country, a 10.14 percent increase compared to the previous day.
Hong Kong followed with a weekly growth in deaths reaching 64 percent. Daily death figures in the country increased by 10.81% compared to the previous day, recording 37 deaths.
Next, Saudi Arabia recorded four deaths (up 33.33%), Japan with 147 deaths (down 3.92%), and South Korea with 52 deaths (down 11.86%).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Asia occurred in Indonesia with 163 deaths. Death reports in the country increased by 191.07% compared to the previous week. Following that, the highest number of deaths was recorded in Japan with 147 deaths (down 3.92%), India with 138 deaths (down 16.87%), South Korea with 52 deaths (down 11.86%), and Hong Kong with 41 deaths (up 64%).
Total deaths in Asia over the past seven days were recorded at 566. This accounts for 26.93 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, totaling 2,102. The number of deaths in Asia increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 492 deaths.
