This week's COVID-19 statistics in the Americas show a decline in deaths in most countries, a reversal from the previous trend of continuous increases. Seven countries reported an increase in deaths this week, while eight others reported fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths were Honduras, Colombia, Ecuador, Canada, and Argentina. A total of 249 deaths were reported in these five countries as of Thursday, September 8, 2022, representing a weekly growth of over 11.11%.
Honduras had the highest weekly increase in deaths, with a growth of 1,600%. Worldometer recorded 17 deaths in the country, compared to just one the previous week.
Colombia followed in second place, with a 137.5% increase in deaths compared to the previous week. The country reported 38 deaths, compared to 16 the previous week.
Rounding out the top five were Ecuador with 30 deaths (up 57.89%), Canada with an increase of 51.22%, and Argentina with 40 deaths (up 11.11%).
In terms of the total number of reported deaths, the United States had the highest number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days, with 1,523. This represents a 29.59% decrease compared to the previous week. Brazil followed with 732 deaths (down 18.49%), Mexico with 229 deaths (down 18.79%), Peru with 215 deaths (down 22.1%), and Chile with 200 deaths (up 1.52%).
A total of 3,296 deaths were recorded in the Americas over the past seven days. This accounts for 29.32% of global COVID-19 deaths, totaling 11,240. The number of deaths in the Americas decreased compared to the previous seven-day period, which saw 4,122 deaths.
