The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that the number of foreign tourist visits (wisman) to Indonesia in December 2021 reached 163,620. This is an 8.66% increase compared to the previous month.
Meanwhile, compared to December 2020, foreign tourist visits to Indonesia saw a slight decrease of 0.28%. In December 2021, 17,790 foreign tourist visits were made via air transport. This is a 10.66% decrease compared to November 2021. Several airports even experienced a 100% decrease, including Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali and Husein Sastranegara Airport in West Java.
Meanwhile, the number of foreign tourist visits via sea transport in December 2021 reached 39,230, a 19.8% increase compared to the previous month. Tanjung Uban Port in the Riau Islands recorded the highest increase at 50.98%.
Furthermore, the number of foreign tourist visits via land transport also increased by 8.86% month-on-month, reaching 106,600 in December 2021. The Entikong border crossing in West Kalimantan recorded the highest increase at 400%, followed by the Atambua border crossing in East Nusa Tenggara at 29.58%.
Cumulatively, from January to December 2021, foreign tourist visits to Indonesia reached 1.56 million. This is a significant 61.57% decrease compared to the same period in 2020.
The number of foreign tourist visits throughout 2021 was also the lowest in the last six years. The number of foreign tourist visits reached 11.5 million in 2016 and continued to increase to 16.1 million in 2019, but plummeted in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
