BPOM Finds 50 Dangerous Traditional Medicines, Mostly for Muscle Aches and Male Enhancement

The Indonesian Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) has found 50 traditional medicine products containing non-standard chemical drug ingredients (BKO) that pose a health risk.

This finding is the result of monitoring conducted during the period of September 2022-October 2023.

"The total findings of illegal traditional medicine (OT) and health supplements (SK) and/or containing BKO during that period exceeded one million pieces, with an economic value of more than Rp39 billion," said the Acting Head of BPOM, L. Rizka Andalucia, in her official statement on Friday (8/12/2023).

BPOM stated that these products were found throughout Indonesia, particularly in Central Java, East Java, Riau, North Sumatra, South Sumatra, East Kalimantan, Bali, and South Sulawesi.

Based on their claimed uses, the most numerous dangerous traditional medicines found by BPOM were for muscle aches (21 products) and male stamina (20 products).

There were also products claiming to be slimming aids (4 products), appetite stimulants (4 products), and cough and cold remedies (1 product).

BPOM has imposed administrative sanctions and revoked distribution permits for businesses producing or distributing these products.

They also urged the public to be more vigilant, not to use products that have been declared dangerous, and to always check the medicines they intend to consume.
