Brebes Red Onion Production Reached 3.8 Million Quintals in 2020

Brebes Regency is known as the largest shallot production center in Indonesia. It contributes 18.5% to the national total production or 57% of Central Java's total production. Brebes shallots not only meet domestic needs but also export demands.

The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) recorded shallot production in Brebes Regency at 3.8 million quintals with a harvested area of 38,900 hectares in 2020. This production increased by 26.6% compared to the previous year, which was 3.03 million quintals.

Wanasari District is the largest shallot center in Brebes Regency. Its production reached 1.007 million quintals with a harvested area of 11,400 hectares last year.

Larangan District follows in second place with production of 825,400 quintals and a harvested area of 7,600 hectares. Bulukamba District is in third place with production of 615,400 quintals and a harvested area of 6,300 hectares.

Furthermore, shallot production in Brebes District was recorded at 532,700 quintals with a harvested area of 5,558 hectares. Meanwhile, shallot production in Ketanggungan District amounted to 192,800 quintals with a harvested area of 1,519 hectares.

The Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs (Kemenkopukm) has designated Brebes Regency as a pilot area for a joint production house program for the development of UMKM products this year. This effort aims to address the plummeting shallot prices during the peak harvest season.
