BPOM Finds Food Products Without Distribution Permits Ahead of Eid al-Fitr

The Indonesia's National Agency for Drug and Food Control (BPOM) intensified food supervision during Ramadan and ahead of Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah/2026.

As of March 5, 2026, BPOM found 56,027 processed food products that did not meet regulations and could potentially harm public health.

BPOM Head Taruna Ikrar said the findings stemmed from supervision of food distribution facilities in various regions of Indonesia.

"A total of 395 facilities were found to not meet regulations due to selling processed food products that do not comply with rules, namely without a distribution permit or illegally, expired, or in a damaged condition," Taruna said at a press conference on Wednesday (March 11, 2026).

Based on the type of violations, there were 27,407 products (48.9%) found to be illegal. According to BPOM, this was triggered by high consumer demand that encouraged the entry of products through illegal channels.

Then, 23,776 products (42.4%) were expired, and 4,844 products (8.7%) were in a damaged condition.

"Expired and damaged products are often found in eastern Indonesia due to the long supply chain," said Taruna.

BPOM also reported that the most findings of non-compliant food products were in South Sumatra, South Sulawesi, Riau Islands, West Kalimantan, and North Kalimantan.
