BPS: Wealthy Households Spend More on Non-Food Items

Indonesian urban residents classified as wealthy allocate a larger portion of their spending to non-food items. This is based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) showing that the average monthly per capita expenditure of individuals earning more than Rp 1,500,000 is higher for non-food items.

Specifically, the expenditure of this wealthy group on non-food items amounts to Rp 1,734,341. This figure is higher than their expenditure on food, which is Rp 1,097,651.

Conversely, urban residents with monthly expenditures ranging from Rp 150,000 to Rp 199,999 spend more on food. Their average food expenditure is Rp 124,518, while spending on non-food items is only Rp 59,779.

The BPS also recorded expenditure data for rural residents categorized by expenditure level. The results show a similar pattern: wealthier rural residents allocate a larger portion of their spending to non-food items.

This data indicates that as income increases, essential needs shift from solely food to encompass non-food items such as housing, education, healthcare, clothing, and even luxury goods.

For impoverished individuals, lower non-food expenditure is expected, as their income is primarily dedicated to food, leaving little for other needs beyond basic survival.
