East Java Became the National Mango Production Center in 2020

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that mango production in East Java reached 1.29 million tons in 2020. This amount is equivalent to 44.6% of total national mango production, making it the largest in Indonesia.

Central Java followed with mango production of 481,900 tons or 16.6%. Mango production in West Java was recorded at 442,600 tons or 15.27%.

Furthermore, mango production in West Nusa Tenggara was recorded at 140,200 tons. Meanwhile, South Sulawesi produced 115,400 tons of mangoes last year.

According to BPS, the large mango production in East Java is inseparable from its harvested area exceeding 83,000 hectares. Meanwhile, mango productivity in the province reached 1.04 quintals per tree.

The largest mango producing area in East Java is Probolinggo Regency. Data from the Probolinggo Regency Agriculture, Forestry, and Plantation Service shows that there are at least more than one million mango trees spread across 21 sub-districts in the region.

Besides Probolinggo Regency, the largest mango producing areas in East Java are Situbondo Regency and Pasuruan Regency. Probolinggo has been known as a mango center since the mid-1970s. Meanwhile, Situbondo and Pasuruan have been since the mid-1980s.
