Here are the 10 Provinces with the Largest Palm Oil Plantation Areas

By October 2019, the area of Indonesian palm oil plantations reached 16.38 million hectares (provisional figure), spread from Sumatra to Papua. According to data from the Directorate General of Plantation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Riau province had the largest area of palm oil plantations, reaching 3.38 million hectares, or almost one-fifth of the total 16.38 million hectares of palm oil plantations nationwide.

The ten provinces with the largest palm oil plantation areas, as shown in the graph, totaled 14.58 million hectares, or approximately 89 percent of the total. Furthermore, assuming productivity over the last 10 years of 2.7 tons/ha/year, these ten provinces also contributed 41.94 million tons, or approximately 94 percent of total national palm oil production in 2019. Of this palm oil production, 16 million tons originated from smallholder plantations, 3.2 million tons from state-owned large plantations, and 25.3 million tons from private large plantations (national and foreign).

According to ownership status, palm oil land nationwide comprises 6.77 million hectares of smallholder plantations, 1.05 million hectares of state-owned large plantations, and 8.56 million hectares of private large plantations.
