The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) recorded an increase in domestic primary energy production in 2021. The percentage increase reached 5.3% compared to 2020.
Total primary energy production in 2021 amounted to 20.37 million terajoules. BPS stated that this figure is still provisional.
Primary energy production is based on the amount of energy extracted. This includes the capture or extraction of fuel, as well as energy flowing from nature, the biosphere, and natural reserves.
BPS classifies several primary energy sources, including coal, crude oil and natural gas liquids (NGL), natural gas, biomass energy, and other energy sources.
Primary energy production has actually fluctuated. In 2017, total production was 17.75 million terajoules. In 2018, it saw a significant increase to 20.42 million terajoules.
A relatively slow increase occurred in 2019, with a total of 20.89 million terajoules. In 2020, production decreased to 19.35 million terajoules. An increase occurred again in 2021, reaching 20.36 million terajoules.
BPS noted that the COVID-19 pandemic, which was still ongoing in 2021, contributed to human mobility and influenced energy needs in Indonesia.
"Generally, there was a decrease in energy needs during the COVID-19 pandemic," wrote BPS in a report published on Tuesday (February 7, 2023).
The data source used was processed by BPS from various publications issued by the Central Bureau of Statistics, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), Pertamina Gas Negara (PGN), the Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Agency (BPH Migas), and Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI).
