National Fresh Milk Production Falls to 906,000 Tons in 2018

The Indonesian government plans to impose import duties on dairy products imported from European Union countries. This is in retaliation for the EU's policy of imposing an 8-18% import tariff on Indonesian biodiesel. What is the actual level of milk production in Indonesia?

National fresh milk production in 2018 fell by 2% to 909,600 tons from 928,100 tons in 2017. This is despite national fresh milk production having increased every year since 2014. Over the past nine years, the highest increase occurred in 2010, reaching 909,500 tons, a 9.9% rise. The next highest increase in national fresh milk production occurred in 2016, a 9.3% rise to 912,700 tons.

Furthermore, the decline in national milk production was not limited to 2018. The largest contraction ever recorded occurred in 2013, plummeting 18% from the previous year to 786,800 tons. A further decrease occurred in 2012, falling 1.5% to 959,700 tons.
