How many large palm oil plantation companies are there?

At the 40th Anniversary Commemorative Summit of the ASEAN-European Union Partnership Cooperation, President Joko Widodo urged the European Union to cease discrimination against palm oil. Policies deemed detrimental to the image of palm oil producing countries must also be eliminated. This is because Indonesia is the world's largest palm oil producer, and the livelihoods of approximately 17 million people are linked to the palm oil industry.

Indonesian large-scale palm oil plantations are the most numerous compared to other plantations. Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded 1,592 large-scale palm oil companies in 2016. Rubber plantations ranked second with 315 companies, followed by coconut plantations with 107 companies.

The area of palm oil plantations in 2016 reached 11.94 million hectares (ha), comprising 4.66 million ha of smallholder plantations and 7.726 million ha of large-scale plantations. Palm oil production reached 33.23 million tons, with 10.87 million tons from smallholder plantations and 22.36 million tons from large-scale plantations.
