The Ministry of Trade's Market and Basic Needs Monitoring System (SP2KP) recorded the average price of red onions in Indonesian traditional markets at Rp40,200 per kilogram (kg) on Monday (8/1/2024).
North Maluku had the highest average price in Indonesia at Rp57,500 per kg. West Papua followed at Rp51,250 per kg, and North Kalimantan at Rp50,917 per kg. Gorontalo and Papua followed with average prices of Rp49,167 per kg and Rp48,889 per kg, respectively.
Citing *Kbr.id*, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) acknowledged that red onion prices have been steadily increasing, particularly in the first week of January 2024, with a national increase of 14.77%.
Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, Acting Head of BPS, stated that signs of this increase were already visible in December 2023, with prices frequently rising until the turn of the year. Amalia explained the reason: "One factor is extreme weather changes, resulting in decreased supply or reduced red onion production," said Amalia during a regional inflation control coordination meeting on Monday (8/1/2024).
