National Turmeric Production Down 4.52% in 2021

Turmeric is a biopharmaceutical plant widely found in Indonesia. Besides its medicinal uses, turmeric is also a popular spice in the domestic market.

In 2021, Indonesia's turmeric production reached 184,820 tons. Data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) shows a 4.52% decrease from the previous year's production of 193,580 tons.

In line with production, the harvested area of turmeric in Indonesia was recorded at 7,350 hectares in 2021, a 9.68% decrease from the previous year's 8,140 hectares.

BPS recorded the highest turmeric production in the third quarter of 2021, reaching 70,800 tons with a harvested area of 34,000 hectares. The lowest production was in the first quarter, at only 15,700 tons.

East Java had the highest turmeric production, contributing 44.90% to national production, reaching 82,990 tons with a harvested area of 3,460 hectares.

Central Java contributed 10.97% with a production of 20,270 tons and a harvested area of 1,100 hectares. West Java contributed 10.85% with a production of 20,050 tons and a harvested area of 795 hectares.

Indonesia's turmeric production has shown a fluctuating trend over the past five years. The lowest production occurred in 2017 at 128,340 tons, while the highest was in 2018 at 203,460 tons.
