Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Luhut Binsar Panjaitan invited the Singaporean government to cooperate in developing food estates in Indonesia.
In his official statement on Tuesday (March 22), Luhut stated that this food estate cooperation is needed to increase agricultural productivity and maintain food security.
According to data from the Global Food Security Index (GFSI), Indonesia's food security in 2021 weakened compared to the previous year.
GFSI recorded Indonesia's food security index score in 2020 at 59.5. However, in 2021, the index dropped to 59.2.
This index placed Indonesia's food security in 2021 at 69th out of 113 countries.
GFSI measures the food security of countries from four major indicators: food affordability, availability, quality and safety, and natural resources and resilience.
According to GFSI's assessment, food prices in Indonesia are quite affordable and the supply is quite adequate compared to other countries.
However, Indonesia's food agricultural infrastructure is still below the global average. Nutritional standards and the diversity of staple foods are also still considered low.
Indonesia's natural resources are also considered to have poor resilience due to a lack of strong political policies protecting them, and are vulnerable to disasters related to climate change, extreme weather, and environmental pollution.
