Indonesian sugar consumption shows an increasing trend after the pandemic.

Indonesian per capita weekly sugar consumption increased throughout 2021. The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) recorded consumption reaching 1.123 kg per capita per week.

This sugar consumption was higher than the previous year's average of 1.105 kg per capita per week. However, consumption in 2019 was the same as in 2021, at 1.123 kg per capita per week.

In 2021, BPS reported national sugar production at 2.35 million tons, comprising 1.06 million tons from state-owned sugar factories and 1.29 million tons from private sugar factories. Meanwhile, sugar demand in 2022 reached approximately 6.48 million tons, consisting of 3.21 million tons of GKP (raw sugar) and 3.27 million tons of GKR (refined sugar).

For information, the Indonesian government raised the price of Pertalite, Solar, and Pertamax fuel starting September 3, 2022. This fuel price increase was not immediately followed by an increase in food commodity prices. Several commodities remained relatively stable in price, including granulated sugar.

The current price of granulated sugar is still approximately 11.62% higher than a year ago. An upward trend in national granulated sugar prices has been observed since the beginning of 2022.
