Sinar Mas Controls More Cross-Sector Land Than State-Owned Enterprises

The Indonesian Environmental Forum (Walhi), in collaboration with Auriga, has documented that ownership of mining, forest, and palm oil land is concentrated in large corporations. Sinar Mas is one of the largest corporations with the largest land area.

The Sinar Mas Group owns 3.07 million hectares of mining, forest, and palm oil concessions. This land area could be even larger if Sinar Mas's property land ownership were included.

The Sinar Mas conglomerate is vast. Sinar Mas has mining operations through Dian Swastatika Sentosa, palm oil operations through Sinar Mas Agro Resources and Technology, and paper operations through Asia Pulp and Paper.

Sinar Mas's land area is even larger than the combined concession land of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs). Walhi recorded SOE concession land at 2.06 million hectares.

April Group has the third largest land area at 1.65 million hectares. April Group's land includes palm oil and forest for paper mills.

Walhi assesses that this cross-sectoral land control is a result of the government's inability to manage the granting of concessions. The government is also unable to limit land ownership for each corporate group.
