Palm oil plays a crucial role as a primary raw material. Data from the Indonesian Palm Oil Association (GAPKI) in 2020 shows that palm oil utilization reached 16,730,000 tons in 2019. In their report titled "Performance of the Indonesian Palm Oil Industry 2019," this usage is divided into three categories: biodiesel, oleochemicals or palm oil derivative products, and food processing.
In 2019, the highest usage of palm oil was for food, reaching 9,860,000 tons. Second highest was its use in biodiesel production at 5,814,000 tons. Oleochemical use amounted to only 1,056,000 tons. This utilization trend also shows an increase over the past five years. In 2015, total consumption was only 8,309,000 tons, while in 2019 it doubled to 16,730,000 tons.
