Ornamental plants are plants that possess aesthetic value, whether in their shape, leaf color, or flowers.
According to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the most produced ornamental plant in Indonesia is the chrysanthemum, with a production volume of around 323 million stems in 2022.
Chrysanthemum, also known as serunai or krisan, is a type of flowering plant from the Asteraceae family.
Initially, chrysanthemums were wild flowers. However, they are now widely cultivated, both for their beauty as ornamental plants and for their use as a base ingredient for tea and body care products such as face cream, lotion, body scrub, and so on.
According to the Minister of Agriculture, Syahrul Yasin Limpo, chrysanthemum flowers also have the potential to become a high-value export commodity.
"Flowers, especially chrysanthemums from tropical countries, have long durability and a very beautiful appearance. The export opportunities for our chrysanthemums are wide open because Indonesia has contracts worth trillions," said Syahrul, as reported on the official website of the Directorate General of Horticulture, Ministry of Agriculture (7/10/2022).
"Over the past three years, agricultural exports have increased by more than 38 percent, valued at Rp625 trillion. Therefore, encouraging chrysanthemum exports will be an addition and a mainstay for increasing agricultural exports in the future," he continued.
Director General of Horticulture Prihasto Setyanto stated that national chrysanthemum exports have increased dramatically. In 2020, export volume was only 43.4 tons with a value of USD 732,000. Then in 2021, chrysanthemum export volume increased to 131.3 tons with a value of USD 903,000.
"For 2023, the construction of 63 greenhouses in 78 Kampung Flori has been planned for national priority flagship commodities, chrysanthemums and orchids, as well as leafy ornamental plants which have recently experienced a surge in demand," said Prihasto, as reported on the official website of the Directorate General of Horticulture, Ministry of Agriculture (7/10/2022).
"With the help of these greenhouses, farmers can improve the quality of the ornamental plants produced. This is to meet export standards and be able to compete with ornamental plant products from other countries," he continued.
Besides chrysanthemums, the most produced ornamental plants in Indonesia are roses, night-blooming jasmine, gerbera, ferns, orchids, philodendron, dracaena, and anthurium flowers, with production volumes as shown in the graph above.
