The government plans to designate 177,000 hectares (ha), or approximately 65%, of the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) area as a protected zone.

Presidential Regulation Number 3 of 2022 defines a protected area as a region whose primary function is to protect the sustainability of the environment.

According to Myrna Asnawati Safitri, Deputy for the Environment at the IKN Authority, the 65% protected area target is a significant challenge.

"It's even more challenging because 60% of the IKN area doesn't consist of healthy ecosystems or environments," she added.

According to the *Master Plan for Biodiversity Management in the Nusantara Capital City*, a large portion of the IKN area slated to become a protected zone currently comprises agricultural land, mining areas, and oil palm plantations (80,000 hectares).

Other areas include industrial/monoculture forests (55,000 hectares), secondary forests remaining after logging/fires (40,000 hectares), and mangrove forests (2,000 hectares).

"Natural forests in IKN are very limited, around 1-2% of the existing area," Myrna said.

"Therefore, transforming this situation into a protected area presents a significant challenge," she added.
