According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia imported 225,600 tons of beef (cattle, buffalo, and similar) in 2022.

This volume increased by 6.7% year-on-year (yoy) compared to 2021, setting a new five-year high, as shown in the graph above.

Not only did the volume reach a record high, but the import value also hit a record. In 2022, the value of beef imports reached USD 861.6 million, or approximately Rp 12.9 trillion (assuming an exchange rate of Rp 15,000 per USD).

This import value increased by 9% (yoy) compared to 2021, marking the highest price since 2018.

Recently, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Erick Thohir expressed his intention to reduce food imports, including beef.

"If we talk about food industrialization, how do we reduce food imports, including beef and sugar," Erick said in a press interview in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara, as reported by *Bisnis.com* on Wednesday (10/5/2023).

Erick estimates that the need for beef imports could double by 2035 due to population growth.

He also believes Indonesia needs to cooperate with other countries, including Qatar, to promote domestic food industrialization and reduce reliance on beef imports.

According to Erick, Qatar once faced difficulties obtaining beef supplies. However, they then imported live cattle and developed local farming.

"If Qatar can import thousands of cattle and then their farming industry advances—is it a desert or full of leaves there? If they can raise cattle in the desert, then we, with our lush environment, should be able to raise cattle," said Erick.
