Indonesia's Electricity Consumption Increased in 2022, Reaching a New Record High

According to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) report, Indonesia's per capita electricity consumption in 2022 reached 1,173 kWh/capita.

This consumption level increased by approximately 4% compared to 2021 (year-on-year/yoy), setting a new record high in the last five decades.

Per capita electricity consumption is the total amount of electricity energy used in a region, divided by its population over a one-year period. This indicates the average electricity consumption per inhabitant.

During the period 1971-2022, the average electricity consumption of the Indonesian population almost always increased every year, except in 1973, 1976, and 1998, when consumption decreased.

The Ministry of ESDM targets a further increase in electricity consumption this year, reaching 1,336 kWh/capita by the end of 2023.

The Ministry of ESDM has prepared a number of strategies to boost this consumption, one of which is to ensure 24-hour electricity supply throughout the country.

"Until December 31, 2022, there were 236 locations where electricity was not yet available 24 hours a day," said the Acting Director General of Electricity at the Ministry of ESDM, Dadan Kusdiana, in a press release on Tuesday (January 31, 2023).

"Several measures are being taken to ensure 24-hour electricity supply, such as network expansion, de-dieselification, relocation of machines, and increasing the capacity of power plants," he continued.

The Ministry of ESDM also targets achieving 100% national electrification ratio in 2023. By the end of 2022, the ratio was still 99.63%, with approximately 318,000 households still lacking access to electricity.
