According to a report from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), global sugar production reached 177.27 million metric tons in 2022/2023.

Meanwhile, global sugar consumption reached 176.007 million metric tons in the same period.

This amount increased by 2.3 million metric tons from the previously recorded 173.6 million metric tons.

Indonesia is the 6th largest global sugar consumer in the world, with consumption reaching 7.8 million metric tons throughout last year.

Sugar consumption increased by 200,000 metric tons in 2021/2022, reaching 7.6 million metric tons.

"Consumption is expected to increase in line with population growth and increased demand from the food and beverage industry," the USDA wrote in its report.

The country with the highest sugar consumption in the world is India, which recorded sugar consumption of 29.5 million metric tons in 2022/23.
