Riau Had the Largest Oil Palm Plantation Area in 2021

Indonesia is known as the world's largest producer of palm oil, supported by its vast palm oil plantation areas. Riau is recorded as the province with the largest palm oil plantation area in Indonesia, reaching 2.89 million hectares.

According to a report from the Ministry of Agriculture, the area of palm oil plantations reached 15.08 million hectares (ha) in 2021. In terms of region, the majority of national palm oil plantations are located in Sumatra and Kalimantan, totaling more than 14 million hectares.

West Kalimantan ranks second with a palm oil plantation area of 2.07 million hectares. Then, the area of palm oil plantations in Central Kalimantan and North Sumatra are 2.05 million hectares and 1.34 million hectares, respectively.

Following these are East Kalimantan with a palm oil plantation area reaching 1.33 million hectares and South Sumatra with 1.21 million hectares. Provinces also possessing large palm oil plantations include Jambi (1.09 million ha), South Kalimantan (504,900 ha), Aceh (495,200 ha), and West Sumatra (399,000 ha).

Riau has the largest national palm oil production with 10.27 million tons. This is followed by Central Kalimantan with a production of 7.92 million tons.
