Indonesia's Garlic Production Falls 44.88% in 2021

Garlic production in Indonesia recorded a decrease in 2021. Citing data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), national garlic production fell by 44.88%, from 81,800 tons in 2020 to 45,090 tons last year.

Over the past five years, garlic production has shown a fluctuating trend. The lowest production occurred in 2017 at 19,510 tons, while the highest production occurred in 2019, reaching 88,820 tons.

This data differs from the projection of the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan). The Ministry of Agriculture even projected that garlic production would continue to increase from 105,280 tons in 2020 to 115,320 tons in 2024, with an average annual increase of 2.3%.

BPS noted that the highest garlic production in 2021 occurred in April, reaching 7,330 tons with a harvested area of 1,030 hectares. Meanwhile, the lowest production occurred in January, at 1,330 tons.

The province with the highest garlic production was Central Java, reaching 25,550 tons with a harvested area of 3,880 hectares, or 56.65% of total national production last year.

West Nusa Tenggara ranked second, contributing 20.45% with production reaching 9,220 tons and a harvested area of 1,050 hectares.

Meanwhile, East Java contributed 9.36% with production reaching 4,220 tons and a harvested area of 812 hectares last year.
