Indonesia's Beef Cattle Population Increases in 2025

The report from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that the population of beef cattle in Indonesia reached 13.54 million head in 2025. This figure increased by 2.12% compared to the previous year (year-on-year/yoy).

Over the past decade, the population of beef cattle in Indonesia has generally been on the rise. However, there was a sharp decline in 2023, followed by a recovery in 2024, as shown in the attached chart.

"This sharp decline in 2023 appears to have occurred simultaneously across almost all islands, indicating the presence of a nationwide factor," wrote the BPS in its report titled "Livestock in Figures 2025".

The BPS also noted that East Java is the province with the largest population of beef cattle in the country, reaching 3.67 million head in 2025.

It is followed by West Nusa Tenggara with 1.34 million head, Central Java with 1.29 million head, Lampung with 905,320 head, and South Sulawesi with 838,480 head.

Meanwhile, Jakarta is the province with the lowest population of beef cattle in Indonesia, amounting to just 2,764 head.
