Sugarcane plantations in Indonesia from 1980 to 2025, private plantations growing the most rapidly

According to the Ministry of Agriculture's estimates, the harvest area of sugarcane plantations in Indonesia reached 526,400 hectares in 2025.

This figure refers to the area of plantations planted with sugarcane and successfully harvested in that year.

Around 284,700 hectares, or 54% of Indonesia's sugarcane harvest area, come from smallholder plantations.

Then there are 147,300 hectares (28%) of private large-scale plantations, and 94,400 hectares (18%) of state-owned large-scale plantations.

Despite the dominance of smallholder plantations, their growth rate is much slower than that of private plantations.

In the past 45 years, the harvest area of sugarcane from smallholder plantations has only grown by 10%, from 259,900 hectares in 1980 to 284,700 hectares in 2025.

Meanwhile, the harvest area of sugarcane from private large-scale plantations has grown by 694% during the period 1980—2025.

The growth of the harvest area of sugarcane from state-owned large-scale plantations has also been quite significant, increasing by 151% during the same period.

Cumulatively, the total harvest area of sugarcane in Indonesia from these three types of plantations has grown by 67% during the period 1980—2025, with the details as shown in the graph.
