Indonesia Makes the List of Top Global Cotton Consumers for 2024/2025

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) projects that global cotton consumption will reach 119.15 million bales in the 2024/2025 trade season.

This volume represents a 1.89% increase compared to the 2023/2025 period, which saw consumption of 114.95 million bales. The USDA also estimates that this upward trend will continue into 2025/2026.

"Global cotton consumption is expected to increase by more than 800 thousand bales to 118.8 million bales, as a 1 million bale increase in consumption in China is able to offset a decline in consumption in Turkey," the USDA wrote in its Cotton: World Markets and Trade report.

In the 2024/2025 trade season, China is estimated to have the highest cotton consumption, reaching 39 million bales. The country has also consistently been the leading global cotton consumer for the past three trade seasons.

Meanwhile, Indonesia ranks 9th globally with an estimated cotton consumption of 1.95 million bales throughout 2024/2025.

Below is a list of the top 10 countries with the highest estimated cotton consumption volume in the world for the 2024/2025 trade season:

1. China: 39 million bales

2. India: 25 million bales

3. Pakistan: 10.8 million bales

4. Bangladesh: 8.2 million bales

5. Vietnam: 8 million bales

6. Turkey: 7.1 million bales

7. Brazil: 3.5 million bales

8. Uzbekistan: 3.1 million bales

9. Indonesia: 1.95 million bales

10. United States: 1.7 million bales

Note that the USDA's 2024/2025 cotton trade season refers to the 12-month period from August 2024 to July 2025.
