Top 10 Indonesian Provinces with the Highest Rice Production in 2023: East Java Takes the Lead

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that national rice production for food consumption from January to September 2023 is estimated at 26.11 million tons. This figure is down approximately 0.22% year-on-year (yoy).

Meanwhile, BPS estimates that potential rice production from October to December 2023 will be 4.78 million tons.

Therefore, total rice production throughout 2023 is estimated to reach 30.89 million tons, or down approximately 2.05% (yoy).

By region, East Java is the province with the largest national rice production. This province is predicted to produce 5.53 million tons of rice throughout 2023.

Unlike national rice production, which is projected to decline, rice production in East Java is projected to increase slightly by 0.68% year-on-year (yoy).

The top three rice-producing provinces this year are dominated by Java Island. West Java and Central Java are ranked second and third, respectively, having produced 5.25 million tons and 5.21 million tons of rice.

The following is a complete list of the 10 provinces with the largest national rice production in 2023, taken from the Area Sample Frame (KSA) survey results by BPS:

1. East Java: 5,538,281 tons
2. West Java: 5,252,742 tons
3. Central Java: 5,211,022 tons
4. South Sulawesi: 2,836,528 tons
5. South Sumatra: 1,586,127 tons
6. Lampung: 1,568,647 tons
7. North Sumatra: 1,193,503 tons
8. Banten: 956,109 tons
9. West Nusa Tenggara (NTB): 880,991 tons
10. West Sumatra: 843,927 tons
