Indonesian Palm Oil Plantation Companies are Concentrated in Sumatra and Kalimantan

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), in 2024, there were 2,285 palm oil plantation companies in Indonesia, spread across 29 provinces.

Of this number, 93% (2,127 companies) were large private plantations, and 7% (158 companies) were state-owned large plantations.

In terms of distribution, the most palm oil plantation companies are located on Sumatra Island (52.69%), followed by Kalimantan Island (42.71%), Sulawesi Island (2.63%), and other islands (1.97%).

On Sumatra Island, many palm oil plantation companies are registered in North Sumatra, Riau, and South Sumatra provinces, with percentages of 27%, 19%, and 16% respectively, of the total palm oil companies on the island.

On Kalimantan Island, the percentage of palm oil plantation companies in each province ranges from 22% to 36%, except for South Kalimantan Province (10%) and North Kalimantan Province (4%) of the total palm oil companies on the island.

When broken down by province, the most palm oil plantation companies are located in West Kalimantan.

4. Riau: 228 companies

5. Central Kalimantan: 216 companies
