Goat Population in Indonesia Over the Last Quarter Century

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the goat population in Indonesia reached 12,565,569 in 2000. This number increased to 13,409,277 in 2005.

Five years later, in 2010, the goat population increased to 16,619,599. The upward trend in the domestic goat population continued in 2015, reaching 19,012,794.

However, in 2024, the goat population decreased by approximately 3.3 million, to 15,710,055.

For information, the goat population figures recorded by BPS are sourced from the Directorate General of Livestock and Animal Health of the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan).

In December 2024, at a meeting with the Indonesian Sheep and Goat Farmers Association (HPDKI) in East Java, Kementan reaffirmed its commitment to supporting sheep and goat farmers in Indonesia.

The Director General of Livestock and Animal Health at Kementan, Agung Suganda, outlined strategic steps to revive the market and stimulate the sheep and goat farming economy.

He reiterated the government's commitment to halting imports of sheep and goat carcasses. This step was taken to ensure that local meat is absorbed maximally.

“We continue to facilitate dialogue between farmers and importers to find the best solutions. With an adequate local sheep and goat population, we don't need to rely on imports,” said Agung, as quoted from the Ministry of Agriculture's website.
