Indonesia is one of the world's largest coffee producers, with production reaching 639,000 tons in 2016. Several types of Indonesian coffee are known to coffee connoisseurs worldwide, such as Toraja coffee, Lampung coffee, Mandailing coffee, and Aceh coffee. Even Luwak coffee, a coffee fermented by the civet/musang animal, is renowned for its exquisite taste, commanding a very high price, reaching millions of rupiah per kilogram.
The United States remains the main destination for Indonesian coffee exports. Data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) recorded that Indonesian coffee exports to the US in 2016 amounted to 67,309.2 tons, a 2.79 percent increase from the previous year's 65,482.3 tons. This figure is the largest compared to exports to other countries. The value reached US$ 269.9 million or approximately Rp 3.5 trillion. Meanwhile, total Indonesian coffee exports reached 412,000 tons with a value of US$ 1 billion.
The area of Indonesian coffee plantations totals 1.23 million hectares (ha), comprising 1.18 million ha of People's Plantations, 22,525 ha of State-Owned Large Plantations, and 25,493 ha of Private Large Plantations.
