Top 10 Sugar Producing Countries in 2023: Indonesia Absent

According to data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), global raw sugar production reached 175.3 million metric tons in the 2022/2023 harvest season.

Brazil was the largest producer of raw sugar, with a production of 38.05 million metric tons, equivalent to 21.7% of total global production.

India ranked second with a raw sugar production of 32 million metric tons in the 2022/2023 harvest season.

Next in line were the European Union, Thailand, China, the United States, Pakistan, Russia, Mexico, and Australia, with production as shown in the graph.

Indonesia was not among the top 10. In the 2022/2023 harvest season, Indonesia produced 2.4 million metric tons of raw sugar, ranking 13th globally.

Indonesia was the 6th largest consumer of raw sugar globally in 2022/2023, with consumption volume of 7.8 million metric tons, approximately three times its production.

In the USDA data, the 2022/2023 global raw sugar harvest season refers to the 12-month period from May 2022 to April 2023, including for Indonesia.

However, there are variations in some countries due to their different harvest patterns.

In Brazil, for example, the 2022/2023 harvest season refers to the 12-month period from April 2022 to March 2023.

Meanwhile, in India, the European Union, China, and the United States, the 2022/2023 season refers to the 12-month period from October 2022 to September 2023.

In Thailand, the 2022/2023 season refers to the 12-month period from December 2022 to November 2023.
