The National Socioeconomic Survey (SUSENAS) conducted by the Central Bureau of Statistics shows that per capita household coffee consumption has been declining. After peaking in 2013, household coffee consumption has decreased to 0.87 kg/capita/year, as shown in the graph below.
Nationally, Indonesian coffee consumption reached 250,000 tons in 2016 and is projected to increase to 276,000 tons in 2017. Based on projections by the Ministry of Agriculture's Data and Information Center, the average growth in coffee consumption is 8.22%. The proliferation of culinary establishments serving brewed coffee throughout the country is expected to boost national consumption, which is projected to reach 369,000 tons in 2021.
For information, coffee supply in 2017 reached 667,000 tons, while consumption was only 276,000 tons, resulting in a coffee surplus of 391,000 tons for Indonesia. This coffee surplus is predicted to continue increasing and reach 425,000 tons in 2021.
