East Java Had the Largest Sugarcane Plantation Area in 2020

Sugarcane, the raw material for the sugar industry, is a strategic plantation commodity in Indonesia's economy.

Of Indonesia's 34 provinces, only 10 have sugarcane plantations. East Java has the largest sugarcane plantation area, reaching 188,589 hectares in 2020.

Not only does it have the largest sugarcane plantation area, but the province, whose capital is Surabaya, also has the highest sugar production among other provinces, namely 1 million tons last year.

Lampung is second with a sugarcane plantation area of 131,658 hectares. Sugarcane plantations in the province produced 729,021 tons of sugar in 2020.

Other provinces have sugarcane plantation areas below 100,000 hectares. These provinces include Central Java with a sugarcane plantation area of 31,973 hectares, South Sumatra 27,550 hectares, South Sulawesi 11,842 hectares, West Java 9,889 hectares, Gorontalo 8,352 hectares, North Sumatra 5,526 hectares, Yogyakarta 2,964 hectares, and West Nusa Tenggara 654 hectares.

Based on data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the area of Indonesia's sugarcane plantations reached 418,996 hectares (ha) in 2020, consisting of 237,851 ha of people's plantations, 124,461 ha of large private plantations, and 56,684 ha of large state-owned plantations.
