National Rice Harvest Area Shrinks by 2.3% in 2021

Based on the Area Sample Frame (ASF) survey results, the realized area of rice harvest in Indonesia reached 10.41 million hectares throughout January-December 2021.

This area decreased by 245,470 hectares (2.3%) compared to the previous year, which reached 10.66 million hectares.

This national trend of declining rice harvest area has occurred over the past four years, as shown in the graph.

The peak of the rice harvest in 2021 shifted to March, with a volume of 1.79 million hectares. In the previous year, the peak harvest occurred in April 2020 with a harvested area of 1.86 million hectares.

East Java recorded the largest rice harvest in 2021, reaching 1.75 million hectares (16.78%) of the total national harvest area. The rice harvest area in this province decreased by 0.39% from the previous year.

The next provinces with the largest rice harvest areas were Central Java, reaching 1.69 million hectares, followed by West Java with 1.6 million hectares.

Meanwhile, the province with the smallest rice harvest in 2021 was Riau Islands, at only 270.16 hectares. This was followed by DKI Jakarta with a rice harvest area of 559.97 hectares, and West Papua with 6,410 hectares.

Along with the decrease in the harvested area, national rice production also fell by 0.43% from 54.6 million tons of dry milled rice (GKG) in 2020 to 54.42 million tons of GKG in 2021.

When converted into rice, the 2021 GKG production is approximately equivalent to 31.36 million tons of rice, down 0.44% from the previous year.
