Based on a report by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia imported approximately 1 million tons of vegetables throughout 2022.

This figure represents a 3.3% increase compared to 2021 (year-on-year/yoy), making it the highest vegetable import volume in the last five years.

In 2022, Indonesia imported the most vegetables from China, accounting for approximately 62% of total national imports.

Significant quantities of imported vegetables also originated from India, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, Ethiopia, Canada, and the United States, with details as shown in the graph.

According to Abdullah Mansuri, the General Chairperson of the Indonesian Market Traders Association (Ikappi), the most imported vegetable commodities are garlic, onions, carrots, broccoli, and peppers.

"Our carrots are small in appearance, although the taste quality is the best. However, imported carrots are larger and smoother. This is an issue that needs to be addressed. Our people tend to choose what's cheaper and larger. Their choice will fall on imports," said Abdullah.
